Should You Use A Steam Mop on hardwood floors |

I recently wrote a blog post about the best steam mop for tile floors. You can check that article out as it shares the advantages of using a steam mop (e.g. faster, easier, no need for chemicals). But, I have many customers that ask me about steam mops for hardwood floors as well.
As a hardwood flooring expert, I need to be honest with my customers, so I give them the same advice that I'm about to give you. Do not use a steam cleaner of any sort on hardwood floors. Even if the steamer claims it's good for hardwood floors, I still would not use it.
Yes, the heat and moisture from the steamer can damage the hardwood floors. It may cause them to warp and/or separate. It will probably also degrade the polyurethane finish. If your hardwood is engineered, it may also delaminate in places. And, it will invalidate your warranty.
I know plenty of people that have used them, but I would never recommend them to my customers (nor my family and friends).
You are much better off using a microfiber mop (like a Swiffer...or Bona has one) and Bona cleaning product. And, then supplement with a vacuum. But, not just any vacuum. Use one that is specifically designed for hardwood floors (most are designed and rated for carpet. See my top pick here: Best vacuum for hardwood floors and wood flooring.
So that's my tip for the day...use a steamer on tile floors (or vinyl) and use a microfiber mop and hardwood vacuum for hardwood floors (and laminate).
